Senegal, In Brief

Just a quick message to say that John and I arrived safely and soundly in Senegal on Sunday. Lots to report, but not much time; but all is well; we had quite an eventful crossing but the ship is in good shape. Dakar is really what one would picture exactly if asked to imagine it, but it was, still is, quite culture shock. Infact everything is expectedly unexepected: this keyboard, as a current example, has 6 or 7 keys moved around for no apparent reason. This blog post has already taken 15 minutes to write. A quick bullet point list of things Ill get John to write about ASAP: - Storm jib - Pirates - Twins - Squall - Pirates (worth mentioning twice) - Losing the wind up radio (ok that is pretty much the story, not much else to say, but i wanted to mention it) - Johns trip round town to sign in (sub topics: standard price of bribe; currency; Alpha the boat man; "oh yes the last people we had killed by pirates were English ... that was last week") - Todays excursion in to town (inc the taxi ride home) Will be here for 5 days-ish, so lots of time to fill in the gaps.

Glad to hear you are well.
You are 2671 miles from the pub.
Try to avoid giving too many bribes, maybe offer them a sandwich or a cup of tea instead?

I was surprised to find that the PC in Senegal was capable of writing lower case letters.

Every email I get from Africa seems to be entirely written in capitals, and is from the family of a retired dictator, offering me $1.2m for some help getting money out of the country.

John and Nick

There is more to the pirate story than meets the eye - try to get hold of page 17 of the Times of Friday 22nd September.

I have today sent your parcel via DHL - their address is 22 Boulevarde Republique - it should be there in two working days
